We thought we had tried about every bakery in the area but today someone showed up with a box of cupcakes from the Silver Spoon, a bakery in East Greenwich, Rhode Island -

Yest another bakery in RI! |
East Greenwich is very much an upscale, affluent suburb of Providence where a lot of doctors live. You would think by now SOMEONE would have brought something in from the place, but today was the first time we had anything from them. Cupcakes appear to be a specialty but they also make macaroons, cakes and have a cafe where you can get coffee. liqueurs and even champagne. It sounds like a very civilized place.

A pretty blue box indeed! |

After the unveiling! |
As they say on their website, the cupcakes came in a very pretty blue box with a cellophane top so they are visible when presented. Inside there was a nice selection of very good looking creations and we were eager to give them a try. From the website we determined that we had the Triple Chocolate, the Silver Dollar, the Chocolate Turtle, and the Champagne. There were several others that we could not identify.

Closer up view of half the selection.... |

....and the other half! |
If you know cupcakes then for the most part it is all about the frosting and the filling if there is any. Cupcakes are best when served at room temperature when the frosting is soft. The frosting is also better if the butter cream is whipped or lightened somehow so it is not too dense or well, fatty. The cakes themselves are usually basic.

The Chocolate Turtle! |
|
The Triple Chocolate - one that was favored! |
|
The Champagen - we liked the sparkly sugar! |
|
The Silver Dollar! |
|
And Salted Caramel something...we think! |
This bakery clearly knew what they were doing. The frostings were very light and went nicely with the vanilla or chocolate cake depending on what you had. The flavors featured were quite good. The Triple Chocolate was particularly well received. The good thing is you could eat one of these and not feel like you've added 500 calories to your daily diet. Our first experience with the Silver Spoon was very much a success!!
